My favorite historical topic has always been the Haitian Revolution. Imagine, slaves not only freed themselves from their plantation masters but also freed an entire island from a mighty colonial power. A Cinderella story. Unfortunately the story of Haiti has not ended in “happily ever after.” Yesterday’s 7.0 scale earthquake has devastated what was already a very fragile place.
So in honor of my favorite hero, Toussaint L’Overture, in remembrance of those who did not survive, and with hope for those who are left struggling, I ask that we, as citizens of the world, do what we can to help the victims of this disaster.

Navelgazing 
I can’t tell you what learning about Toussaint L’Overture in the 4th or 5th grade to my morale and pride in being a Black person. It was profound. Indeed, let’s do what we can.
You probably already know this, but a film on the life of L’Overture and the Haitian Revolution is in the works. The background behind this independent film is interesting (produced by Danny Glover, stone-walled by Hollywood, financially backed by the Venezuelan Government).
It’s important for these (our) stories of triumph to be told.
I remember hearing about that film. I’ll have to check on its progress. Too few Americans are aware if this history. In fact, it always irks me when the Haitian Revolution is referred to as a “slave revolt.” It was way bigger than that.
