What do you mean we don’t breastfeed?

Recently the Centers for Disease Control released this report on breastfeeding rates. Compared with other races/ethnicities, black women have the lowest breastfeeding rates in the United States. Apparently, only 54% of black women initiated breastfeeding between 2004 and 2008. This isn’t the first I’ve heard of the dismal breastfeeding rates among black women but this is the most recent report.

It’s easy to become caught up in the negative aspect of the report without realizing that the report still points out that more than half of black women initiated breastfeeding. It’s not a sizeable majority but it’s a majority nonetheless.

Yes, I do breastfeed!

So, let’s make those black breastfeeding moms more visible. Join me at my second home, Black Women Do Breastfeed, where I highlight the breastfeeding stories of women like me.
